Selz School

The first school for Selz was located a short distance northwest of town. Later on, a school was opened in Selz. In 1914, there were 33 students in grades one through eight. School was in session 124 _ days. The teacher was Casey Wagmon. The following year, enrollment increased to 67 students in grades one through six. School was in session 146 days. In 1924, the enrollment increased to 80 students. In 1925, enrollment decreased to 35-55 students. In 1947, grade nine was started, with eight students. The following year, grade 10 was added with 15 students in these two grades. High school was last taught in 1960-61.

Enrollment decreased to 43 in 1975-76. Since then it has been decreasing. Presently, there are 18 students in grades one through eight. The teachers at the present time are Mrs. Magdalena Hoffart, who has been at Selz since 1957 and Mrs. Harriet Bjorke, who has been teaching there since 1978.

Sisters taught in Selz from 1947 to 1957, but left after a law was passed prohibiting them from wearing religious garb.

County superintendents visiting Selz School were: Sara C. Guss, Leonard Orvedal, and J.B. Voeller in the early 30's to the early 40's; Nettie Thorsen, 1942-1972, followed by Grace Hagen, Richard Davidson and presently, Loane Schmidt.

The school burned December 18, 1935. The cause of the fire was thought to be an overheated furnace. A new school was built with the help of the WPA. Newell Bjorke and Jacob Hoffart were the carpenters.
