The Selz Patient Homemakers Club was organized in July, 1947 at the Peter L. (Clara) Hoffart home. Twelve members signed up and it was put in the minutes not to have more than twelve members most of us had small homes. The colors chosen were black and white, the flower, the wild rose. The Robin was our bird and the motto, ÒIf at first you don't succeed try againÓ. There were no dues, 10 cents was charged for lunch. We met once a month with the hostesses serving in alphabetical order. It was decided not to serve more than three things for lunch- pickles didn't count.
Mrs. Peter (Clara) L. Hoffart was elected President, Mrs. Steve (Agnes) Volk, Vice President and Program Chairman and Mrs. George (Helen) Swanstrom, Secretary, treasurer. We were a very active club and worked together, had small projects and donated to worthy causes we donated $100 to the St. Aloisius Hospital for its building fund. Our members were all neighbors living only a few miles apart. We had our meetings whether it was harvest or stormy weather. One time our president picked us all up in a bobsled and team of horses. As time went on some people moved away and we filled in new members.
There were two members who received 25 year pins: Mrs. Herman (Lena) Meier and Mrs. Frank (Frances) Kunnaz. The following members signed up when the club was started: Mrs. Anton (Rose) Goldade, Mrs. Pat (Mary) Gores, Mrs. Peter L. (Dorothy) Hager, Mrs. Anton (Mary) Gisi, Mrs. Joe (Jean) Burgard, Mrs. Emanuel (Luella) Fix, and Mrs. Adam (Katie) Klein, Mrs. Pius (Barbara) Keller, Mrs. Kenneth (Agnes) Larson, Mrs. Peter (Katie) Roerick, Mrs. Joe (Francis) Meier, Mrs. August (Eva) Lesmeister, Mrs. Victor (Anna Marie) Ripplinger, Mrs. Gerald (Helen) Job, Mrs. Joe (Mildred) Heilman, Mrs. Edmund (Leah) Gumeringer, Mrs. John (Katie) Yohner, Rena Pratt and Mrs. Clements (Marie) Vetter.

Mrs. August E. (Barbara) Axtman organized the first homemakers club at her home in June, 1947. Mr. Howard McCloud was there to organize the club. There were nine charter members. Mrs. Axtman was President; Clara Held, Vice President; Pauline Ziegler was appointed Secretary- Treasurer.
Several years later, there were sixteen members. On April 27, 1972, the following members received their 25 year pins: Ella Heilman, Barbara Axtman, Clara Held, Mary Held, Pauline Ziegler and Elizabeth Krenzel. We joined the Fessenden Extension Office and received our pins at the Eagles Club in Harvey. The Club decided to change its name to the South End Helpers, because the members lived in the South end of Pierce County. When we joined the Fessenden Home Extension Agent, the Club's name was changed to the Selz Busy Bees and will be celebrating its 34th anniversary in 1981.
Social life in the club kept the members active. In the earlier years, we had Silver Wedding Anniversaries, 35th Anniversaries, baby showers, farewell parties and the annual picnics. The club served lunch for the softball games, and auction sales. Gifts were exchanged for birthdays and Christmas. The club also had secret sisters with members sneaking gifts to their secret sisters throughout the year. Names were revealed at the annual Christmas Party.
The club also made many useful crafts, as well as demonstrated other arts such as sewing, cooking, home management, freezing, canning, painting and making winter bouquets.
